Early morning light in the summer is simply divine. It is soft and subtle, yet holds so much promise for the day to come.

I’ve spent a lot of time over the years waking up early to greet the sun rising over the ocean. I’m always surprised at how much light there is before the sun breaks the horizon, but also how no two days are ever the same. This painting is a memory of an early summer sunrise when the air was delightfully humid and I longed to be sailing on that boat as it headed toward the rising sun. — Katie Swatland
